A surprise in the cupboard!

My little brother got me a paperwhite bulb+pot set for Christmas. You may remember the drill—tuck the bulbs into the pot and hide the pot in a dark cupboard for two weeks so the bulbs start to take root. So I tucked my bulbs in pot and put it in the cupboard on new year’s day. Imagine my surprise when I opened that cupboard yesterday to get something and found these sprouts! The pot is also now cracked so I don’t know WHAT went on in that cupboard.

Have you had good luck with paperwhites? What bulbs or seeds are you starting indoors?

  1. Hi I just got your email on this.Thought I’d reply. Yes -I put some Paper Whites in some containers with rocks & water around the week before Thanksgiving. I was hoping to have them for Christmas. They got tall, but didn’t bloom until New Years & the rest bloomed after that. They wrer slower growing this year for some reason. I have never heard of putting them in soil & then in a cupboard though.I love to force bulbs. I did some Hyacynths & Tulips too in soil w/1 TBSP. of bonemeal in each hole before placing the bulbs in & covering them & watering-but they didn’t bloom. Some of the Hyacynths started to open & they were really short-only about 3inches tall, but then they dried up & stoped opening & growing-I don’t know what happened . I kept watering them & had them in sunlight .Tulips havn’t done anything yet-they look like the’re trying-but stalling I guess. Got any Tips? I could use some. I’m New at this & read Gardening Books & Magazines & website Garden Articles a lot. You can never know enough about Gardening-there’s always something New to learn. : D
